Hot Summer Nights: the Substance August recap

And you thought the heat wave in Portland was caused by weather variations and prevailing winds and global warming and what-have-you.

Wrong.

It’s because we’ve been busy on some hot stuff. Here’s a quick rundown of the things we can tell you about that went down in August, in no particular order…

Ride Oregon Ride / RideOregonRide.com

Sometimes opportunities arise that combine what you do for work and what you do in life into one awesome experience. Such is the case with the Ride Oregon Ride website; combining our love for cycling with our passion for interactive brand experiences.

The “everything cycling” site for Travel Oregon, Ride Oregon Ride is an online resource for cyclists living in Oregon and visiting Oregon. From road routes to mountain biking trails to cycling-related events and cycling resources, there’s something for every cyclist and every skillset. You can save rides you want to do and find other riders interested in doing the same rides, and if you’ve done a ride you can act as an information ambassador and pass along your wisdom about a particular ride. You can even submit road routes, trails and events to the site to contribute to the cycling spirit in Oregon.

So get on your bike and ride Oregon. Ride!

Beloved Cycles / belovedcycles.com

Keeping with the bicycle theme, we recently had the pleasure of working with our good friends at Weights & Pulleys on a new site for a local bike framebuilder Cycle Works Oregon… the result is Belovedcycles.com. Simple and straightforward, just like the bikes, the Beloved site gives some info on each bike, then directs you to your local bike shop (right now you can go to Veloce Bicycles in Portland, and expanding to more shops around the country) to help get measured and outfitted. Who wants a new bike? We do.

Oregon Bounty / bounty.traveloregon.com

Just saying the word “Oregon” to a foodie will likely get their mouth watering… there’s so much wonderful food and drink in our state that you could plan a trip just around eating and drinking. Fortunately, you can on the new Oregon Bounty website. Sampling the flavors across the state, you can find experiences, events and unique places to eat and drink the bounty our state provides. Plus, you have the opportunity to win an all-expenses paid cuisinternship being a chef, fisherman, winemaker, brewer, distiller, rancher, or chocolate+cheesemaker, so get your entries in.

The New Communicators / thenewcommunicators.com

The New Communicators convergence is about the evolution of conversation: exploring the pathways through which an originator interacts with a receiver. It’s for new communicators, by new communicators. From Wednesday, October 28th to Friday, October 30th, you’re invited to hold an event around the theme of Evolving Conversation and explore what it means to be a New Communicator. For more information and to get involved, come by the New Communicators Open House at Substance (1551 SE Poplar) on September 1st at 6pm. You can also learn more about the idea at thenewcommunicators.com, follow the New Communicators on Twitter, and read more on the Substance site.

The Traveler’s Journey: From Clicks to Packed Bags / SXSW Panel Picker

Between travel websites, travel review sites, social networks, and a wealth of online information, how do travelers make decisions on where to go and what to do? More importantly, what can you do to influence their travel/tourism decisions? This panel discussion at SXSW will explore how to accurately communicate a real, physical experience to someone who isn’t actually in that real, physical experience; how to turn those people browsing information into travelers coming to your experience; and finally, how the experience is supported when the person arrives by using interactive channels. That’s a lot to cover in an hour, and your vote will help make it happen. So go to the SXSW Panel Picker, register, and give our panel a thumbs up. Thanks!

Coffee with Likemind

Last month’s coffee with Likemind inspired the idea behind the New Communicators. This month’s coffee unveiled the idea and got us moving forward on making the New Communicators convergence happen. What will next month’s coffee with Likemind hold in store? You’ll have to wait until then to find out, but chances are if you show up, the conversation will be as interesting as you are. This summer we enjoyed the back patio at Tiny’s, but in September we’ll be moving back indoors to the Stumptown Ace location. Hope to see you there…

Substance Rolling Coffee

By the time you’ve read all the way down to here, you should have an idea that we like cycling. And we like coffee. So why not combine them into a Substance Rolling Coffee, where we meet up, go for a beautiful bike ride along the East Bank Esplanade, and wind our way back down to Voodoo Doughnut Too? Exactly, there’s no reason not to do that. So we did. You can check out the photos by Momo the Monster on Flickr.

Think that’s it for August… it’s been a busy month.
