We’re excited to be sending two brave Substance team members down to the interactive portion of South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. As one of the premier interactive conferences in the world, SXSW looks to be one part inspiration, one part interaction, and one part free beer. And when you mix all 3 parts, you get a inspiring, interactive beer. That’s free. You can’t beat that with a stick.
The schedule looks chock full of good stuff. We couldn’t possibly list out all the panels we’re attending, especially since there are occasionally 3 or 4 at the same time so we’re not sure how to work out the time/space continuum, but some of the events and activities we plan on attending are:
Friday, March 13th
2:00pm – Everything You Know About Web Design Is Wrong
5:00pm – Plan B: Can an Ad Guy Bring Bike Sharing to America?
- or -
5:00pm – Try Making Yourself More Interesting
Saturday, March 14th
10:00am – Interactive Beyond the Screen: Branding in Four Dimensions
11:30am – Change v2 (with Lawrence Lessig)
4:00pm – Mobile Social SXSW BBQ
5:00pm – Designing the Future of The New York Times
Sunday, March 15th
10:00am – Is Spec Work Evil? The Online Creative Community Speaks
11:30am – Journey to the Center of Design
2:00pm – Sunday Keynote Interview with Nate Silver
3:30pm – We Have Been Objectified: Identity, Consumerism, and the Future of Designed Objects
Monday, March 16th
10:00am – Shift Happens: Moving from Words to Pictures
3:30pm – Wireframes for the Wicked (this one is really just because I’m curious if people still use wireframes… we’ve moved on to Inspireframes)
5:00pm – Kick Ass or Suck – Escaping Internet Mediocrity
Tuesday, March 17th
11:30am – Designers and Developers: Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?
2:00pm – Tuesday Keynote Interview with Guy Kawasaki
Then there are all the social gatherings and after-parties that sound totally rad, like the 97 Bottles Happy Hour, the Bike Hugger After Party at Mellow Johnny’s (hoping to get a t-shirt designed by our friends at Weights & Pulleys), and South by Northwest to name a few.
From our team, Stephen Landau (when did I start talking about myself in the third person?) and Erin Kurtz will be around and about. Here’s what we look like, so if you see one of these photos on an ID badge, chances are you’ve either found Erin or me (Stephen), or a close facsimile thereof.

If you’re also going to SXSW, we’d love to meet you in person at one of the above presentations, social events, or to grab some BBQ, coffee and/or beer beforehand. And for those staying at the Hyatt, we get in Thursday night so we’ll meet you at the bar. Let us know if you’re there.
To get in touch with us when we’re at SXSW, the best way would be to send a DM or @ through the Substance Twitter account (http://twitter.com/substance) or through Stephen’s Twitter account (http://twitter.com/stlandau). We’ll be dropping our customary “We believe…” prefix on our tweets during SXSW to save valuable characters. And there will also probably be some duplicate Substance/stlandau tweets, so sorry about that in advance if you follow both. If you’re not on Twitter just leave a comment and we’ll track you down via your email.
For those not going, we’ll miss you in Austin. We’ll be tweeting updates and trying to put recaps, photos and videos on the blog to let you know how it goes.
See y’all in Texas!
