Following our “practice what we preach” philosophy, we’re trying out Twitter.
What is Twitter? I’ve heard some people call it micro-blogging… basically it’s a method to let people know what you’re doing, but you’re limited to 140 characters. You can post a Twitter via the web or via a text message on your mobile device. People can then subscribe to your Twitter feed to receive the info as an RSS feed or as a text message to their phone. It’s a one-to-many publishing technology, and you can choose how you want to receive the publication.
Why would you want to do this? We’ve been discussing ideas surrounding Twitter with clients lately, thinking about how it can create stronger brand relationships. For example, I read somewhere (can’t find the source) that the John Edwards campaign is Twittering about their campaign stops, what topics they’re discussing, etc. It allows people to follow John Edwards from a more day-to-day or hour-by-hour view, via RSS or text message. So we’re discussing ideas on how Twitter can be used to give updates/status on information that people might want to know on a regular basis.
What will we Twitter about? Good question… how often can we Twitter about going to get coffee… but if you’re interested, you can subscribe here: twitter.com/substance
Since the account is set up for our company, we’ll differentiate between who is Twittering by adding our initials at the end (-sl or -dlr). We’ll see how it goes.
