When I grow up… Career Jam

Saturday, April 21st was PAF’s Career Jam. Following last week’s AIGA Student Portfolio Review, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this event. I was originally scheduled to be on the “creative” panel, but the “interactive” panel was a bit slim so I shifted over a room. And I’m glad I did. Not sure what all was talked about in…

    Coffee with Likemind Recap

Last Friday we joined up with Likemind to chat over cups of coffee. A bunch of interesting people like Sage, Fredrick and Machele (among others), and some interesting conversations. It was sitting room only – the couches filled up quickly, but many found the floor around the coffee table fairly comfortable.Likemind is once a month, so you’ll need to wait…

Mr. Coffee, that’s my name. That name again is Mr. Coffee.

Substance is proud to announce extended beverage service for guests. Beyond our existing refreshing water service… We’ve expanded to brew-while-you-wait coffee from Stumptown. What we do is take said refreshing water, heat it, and pour it over ground-up Stumptown coffee beans. There’s a fancy machine that does most of the work for us… see below. Standing in the aisle at Fred Meyer,…

    Congrats to Travel Oregon

Got an email a couple days ago from my friend Mo at Travel Oregon… said that the Travel Oregon website is an official honoree in this year’s Webby Awards. Congrats go out to him, the TO team, and the people who made the site possible. You can read more on the Travel Oregon blog, and a third-party review of the site…

Coffee with Likeminds, Friday, April 20th

This Friday’s coffee is a combo deal… we’ll be joined/joining up with the Likemind group for what I believe is their inaugural Portland coffee. Same place: Stumptown on SW 3rd. Because of this, the time is changing a bit… moved a half hour earlier to 8am. Personally, I might be a bit late, but this should give the opportunity to…

Digital Media Grow Up in City

http://www.oregonlive.com/business/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/business/1176434704149100.xml&coll=7 I’m not sure what “Digital Media Grow Up in the City” means exactly… but I do know David is quoted in the article. I only heard his end of the conversation with the journalist, so I know he said a lot of other things besides the quote used. The article talks about how small studios are thriving in Portland because of…

Coffee, the Office, Portfolios and a Violinist

Been busy for the last few days, running around town, cleaning up the office, and doing what our clients pay us to do. Coffee on Friday was a lot of fun. Had a pretty sizable group, which made it difficult to capture all the conversations going on. So pics and names will have to suffice… you can just imagine all the…

In the next day or so, we’ll be switching our hosting over to DreamHost. What does this mean to you? Not much, though eventually this blog will move over to a new url. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know when that will happen and what that url is. We’ll also throw a redirect on the blog here so you’ll end…

    Announcing Forward07

We received an invitation about a month ago from our friend Brooks over at 52 Ltd. He asked if we’d be interested in helping out with this conference he was putting together, Forward07. When we heard the idea of the conference was creative innovation and sustainability (both environmental and cultural), we jumped at the chance. Then we learned who the…

    Coffee Review, Office Progress

Friday started with some coffee and conversation. I tried taking notes so I could write the review, but re-reading them, they’re a bit sketchy. We started with Portland’s springtime reputation for being the pollen capital of the United States. From there, it was the fact that in New Orleans the public defenders are paid from the revenue for traffic violations. Since…

Office. Just the Office. (And Opening Day!)

Update on the office today… some pics of the almost finished long T table… Don’t know if the table qualifies as a “long table” or not… it’s about 10 feet from the end to the T against the windows. Not sure if we’re going to keep the divider on the center of the table or not. Now that I see the…

Even More about Watering Holes and Campfires (and the Office)

I might have been a bit dismissive of watering holes… if they’re like the one above, that is. And I don’t get shot… (Thanks to my father-in-law for providing the photo. I assume he found it online, and isn’t from his past experiences.) Thinking a bit more about meeting rooms and conference tables, watering holes and campfires, I realized the metaphor…

    Coffee Review, March 29th

While the line was kind of long at the counter, I think everyone finally got their caffeine hit. Plus I remembered my camera… From left… Elizabeth and David (my business partner at Substance)… …David (again) and Jessie… …Shaun and James. Conversation ranged from what a “long table” agency is and all the different kinds of long tables: long and straight, doughnut, inverted doughnut, cafeteria……
