Great turnout for today’s coffee morning. From left to right: David, Dan (from the Portland Trailblazers – no, not a player), Alison (coffee regular), Shannon, and Cody, Matt and Sam from the University of Oregon. (Hope I got all the names and links correct… if not, let me know.) The U of O guys were in the group that Russell Davies corrupted for a week in October 2006.
We struggled for a bit to find a good setup at Tiny’s since they had recently replaced their thrift recliners and couch with some new booths, but once we got all the chairs arranged the conversation started to flow. Everything from having to pay $5 to wear jeans to work, to the benefits/drawbacks of working at large/small agencies, to what we’re reading, to Best Buy eliminating meetings. The Best Buy thing is really interesting… not having mandatory meetings, not having set hours, but judging people’s performance on, well, performance and output. Rule #1 of their ROWE (results-only work environment) program is “People at all levels stop doing any activity that is a waste of their time, the customer’s time, or the company’s money.” We’ll have to wait and see how it works out for Best Buy, but the idea is just an extension of their commitment to innovation. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But you’ll never know until you try it.
Thanks to everyone who came out and shared the ideas. Not sure if we’re going to do every week or every other week, so we’ll see how people are feeling next week.
