    Frank Gehry

At home we got rid of expanded basic cable, so now all we have is simple basic cable… networks, PBS, Discovery Channel, and for some reason we get E! After we’d watched a bit of America’s Next Top Model on the C-Dub my wife was flipping through our limited selection and landed on PBS. Happened to be Sketches of Frank…

    thinkAbout 2006

I had the opportunity to attend the thinkAbout conference (or is it just thinkAbout?) on September 13th and 14th in Baltimore, MD. Here’s the basic rundown: the conference, in it’s 9th year, is organized by Joe Pine and Jim Gilmore, the authors of The Experience Economy. As the title of the book pretty much sums up, the premise is that…

    Planning interactive experiences

The other day I was checking out Russell Davies’ (Davies’s?) blog. I don’t know Russell personally… only through his blog. So I’m making some assumptions about who he is and what he believes, but he seems to be a smart, interesting and thought-provoking kind of guy. He does a weekly conversation at a coffee shop/tea shop/place, but he lives in…

HP gets into the diet business

HP has released some new cameras with built in “slimming effect.” Basically, it looks like the camera has the ability to reduce the horizontal scale of the photo. For example, in the photo above, they shaved 6 pixels of weight off their model.I guess the saying that the camera adds 10 pounds will be null and void pretty soon.

    What’s the point of YouTube?

I came across two videos on different blogs that sum up different kinds of content on YouTube.Content Type #1: The video blogI don’t know if this personalizes or dehumanizes the people that put stuff up on YouTube. Maybe both? (There’s a bit of profanity in this one, so if you’re sensitive to that kind of thing, maybe turn off the…

Love to fly / Hate to travel (Part 3 of 3)

I’m writing this post while waiting at Baltimore’s airport (BWI). But I probably won’t have the opportunity to post this until I’ve left BWI because I couldn’t connect to their wireless access (finally able to post it from home). Travel can be great, and travel can be terrible. What’s so great/terrible about it?—Play Structuresabove: Portland International Airportabove: Detroit International AirportI…

    Taking risks and making mistakes

Yesterday my oldest daughter started kindergarten. She came home thrilled, energized, and with a slew of papers. This was a bit of the “first day” letter from the teacher:After I thought, “why do people use Comic Sans?” and “hat a terrible rag on the right side,” I thought, “Wow, that’s it right there.” Taking risks and making mistakes are the…

    September 11th, 5 years later

Today was my older daughter’s first day of kindergarten. After we delivered her to her classroom, there was a gathering of kindergarten parents in the auditorium of the school to have coffee and do whatever they needed to do to get over the now drastic change to their lives, of having their children entering school. Conversations eventually led to the…

Exploring science, discovering fun: my trip to Columbus, Ohio (part 2 of 3)

The second experience I wanted to tell you about from my Columbus, Ohio trip was going to COSI. I think it stands for Columbus Something of Science and Industry, based on what I know about OMSI here in Portland. From what I remember as a kid, these kinds of places didn’t exist. The only childhood experience that would be close would…

A Lincoln Continental, a ramp, and a mile of water

Granted, it’s a rocket-powered Lincoln Continental.Spectacular failures are only failures if they fail to be spectacular.
